Weight Loss Surgery Options for a Better You

If you or someone you love has been severely struggling with his or her weight for a long period of time, it may be a good idea to consider bariatric surgery* as a long-term weight loss solution. Bariatric surgeries* (also called gastric surgeries*) change the size and/or mechanics of the stomach to limit and control a person’s appetite. At 1st Choice Weight Loss, we offer three primary bariatric weight loss surgery options —gastric sleeve surgery*, gastric bypass surgery*, and gastric banding revision* — for patients in Houston, TX and the surrounding region. Our weight loss doctors have decades of combined experience performing these surgeries for thousands of patients, and will be happy to help you take a crucial step towards lifetime weight loss as soon as you are ready. Read on to learn more about our bariatric surgical* options, and give our office a call at (281) 888-7767 to schedule an appointment with our doctors today!

Gastric Sleeve Surgery*: What Is It and How It Works?

Gastric sleeve surgery* is a restrictive operation that makes the size of the stomach smaller in order to help a patient lose weight. Under Anesthesia and after several small incisions are made in the abdomen, laparoscopic surgery is performed and several small instruments are used to remove a portion of the stomach and staple the remaining portion back together. The result: a MUCH smaller stomach, a smaller appetite, and a clear path to weight loss.

The Advantages of Gastric Sleeve Surgery*

Fast, effective, and minimally invasive, gastric sleeve surgery* is an excellent choice for anyone seriously considering lifetime weight loss. Here are a few of its benefits.

  • Ease of Surgery: Surgery is minimally invasive.
  • Reduction of Hunger: The area of the stomach that is removed for most patients is also the area that produces much of the body's ghrelin, a hormone that largely controls hunger. The result is significantly reduced hunger.
  • Speed of Weight Loss: Many gastric sleeve surgery* patients lose up to half their body weight, but do so at a relatively gradual rate when compared with patients of other bariatric surgeries, such as gastric bypass surgery*. Gradual weight loss may lessen an individual's risk for unwanted symptoms such as nutritional deficiencies and stretch marks and sagging skin.

Other Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Options

In addition to the gastric sleeve* procedure, we offer two other bariatric weight loss surgeries — gastric bypass surgery* and gastric banding revision* — designed to help those afflicted with obesity lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. You can learn more about gastric bypass surgery* and gastric banding* below.

Gastric Bypass Surgery*

In gastric bypass surgery*, the stomach is surgically divided into two parts, an upper, smaller part where food enters and is stored, and a larger, lower part that is bypassed. To ensure that a patient's digestive system works properly, the smaller part of the stomach is connected directly to a part of the small intestine called the jejunum, effectively bypassing a part of the digestive tract that absorbs a large number of calories and nutrients. The result is lessened caloric absorption and smaller appetite.

Gastric Banding*

Gastric banding* is a laparoscopic surgical procedure, done frequently in past, where a band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, effectively creating a smaller stomach and limiting the amount of food a patient can intake at a time. This band can be adjusted to make food pass more slowly or quickly through the stomach, thereby decreasing or increasing appetite. This procedure is very uncommonly done nowadays due to possible complications, and overall low weight loss results, Dr. Mirza does not recommend the Gastric Banding*, and offers follow up care, and revisional surgery options for those who had the band. Not all patients who have the gastric band need them removed, only when there is a complication, or no success.
